How to Stay Warm at a Mountain Elopement

Base Layers (Thermals & Tights)

Let’s start with the basics here. First of all, if you’re getting married in the Rocky Mountains, chances are it might be cold, even in the summer. Sunrise elopements are notoriously cold until the sun rises so we want you to be prepared. And it’s always better to bring warm things that you might not end up needing than to be cold and wishing you had packed some extra clothes in. Thermal bodysuits or nude fleece-lined tights under your outfit can make a huge difference. If you get a shade to match you skin tone, we won’t even be able to see it in photos when you’re dress is lifted.

Pack some wool socks you’re okay with being photographed in, cozy and cute is the goal here.

Outer Layers (Coats, Jackets & Sweaters)

Layers aren’t just practical, they’re an opportunity to add personality and texture to your elopement look. From tailored to rugged, here are your best bets for keeping warm while still looking like yourself.

  • Embroidered or custom denim jackets: A cropped jean jacket with your name, elopement date, or floral design adds a cool, personal touch. These work especially well over bridal or jumpsuit looks.
    • Shop: Etsy (for custom embroidery), Free People, or Levi’s for a blank canvas.
  • Matching sherpa fleeces or shackets: Great for cozy moments and cabin-core vibes. These look effortless over dresses or with dress pants and boots.
    • Shop: Patagonia, Aritzia (TNA line), or Abercrombie.
  • Wool or cashmere trench coats: If you want a sleek look for urban elopement vibes mixed with mountain views.
    • Shop: Babaton by Aritzia, Everlane, or Reformation.
  • Chunky knit sweaters: Go for neutral or earth tones that complement the landscape. Cream, sand, charcoal, or deep green all work beautifully.
    • Shop: Oak + Fort, Sézane, or local boutiques in Canmore. The pink sweater that the bride is wearing below is from Moo Knit.
  • Vintage cardigans or blanket coats: These look amazing in photos and have a timeless feel. Bonus if you find one with western or alpine patterns.
    • Shop: Thrift stores, ASOS Marketplace, or Canadian vintage shops like Good Neighbour.

Emergency Warmth (Hand Warmers & Down Layers)

If you want to show off your dress, suit, or jumpsuit but stay warm during your activities or while waiting for golden hour, bring layers you can throw on between shots or at higher elevations. We always suggest bringing some puffy jackets and we have even been known to bring along a packable down blanket to throw over you to keep warm between photos during those sunrise elopements.

We always suggest that couples bring along some hand warmers, seriously, it makes all the difference having your hands be warm. If you have a jacket or a dress with pockets, even better! You can keep the hand warmers on your body for quick warm up breaks whenever you need.

Best Boots for a Mountain Elopement

You’ll want something you can hike or walk safely in, but there’s no need to sacrifice style.

Hiking Boots

Neutral-toned hiking boots (white, camel, or brown) are the go-to. We love Danner and Kodiak for their mix of comfort and aesthetics.

Blundstones & Chelsea Boots

These types of boots are great if we are heading to a location that is a bit easier to access (read: not a multi hour hike). They pair well with suits and dresses and you can even get some cute custom embroidery done via Etsy to personalize them a bit more.

Bringing Heels

If you want heels for a moment, we love that for you, but we suggest carrying them in your pack and changing into them for either the ceremony or some portraits after. Even still, most locations aren’t very heels friendly and we want you to be able to run around and enjoy the day without risking a rolled ankle, so we do think you should bring along extra shoes that you don’t mind being photographed in as well.

Statement & Practical Accessories

This is where things get personal. Statement and practical accessories are your chance to lean into your personality and make your mountain elopement feel fully you. The layers keep you warm, but these pieces tell the story. Whether that’s a dramatic veil in the wind, a vintage-inspired hat, heirloom jewelry, or a cozy blanket you wrap up in together, this is where your style really comes to life.

Veils for Mountain Elopements

When people ask is if they should bring a veil, our answer is always YES. It’s so dreamy floating through the wind in the mountains. And we can pop it in for a few photos and then take it out again so you don’t have to worry about dealing with a veil flying around all day. Some people have brought family heirloom veils as well which always adds such a nice touch and we can even use them for detail photos. And there’s no need to spend a bunch of money on one, you can them for pretty reasonable prices online these days. One thing we like to point out is that you should make sure that the white tone of the veil matches your dress tone.

Wraps, Shawls & Capes

We love a good shawl or wrap moment. They’re not just for warmth, they add movement and colour to your photos. And same as with the veil, we can take some photos with and some without for variety!

Capes are incredible for snowy elopements, windy ridgelines, fall forest ceremonies, and dramatic summit portraits. Long wool capes in ivory, charcoal, or rust tones photograph beautifully against mountain landscapes. They also allow you to stay warm while still showing your outfit underneath.

Blankets

We definitely always suggest bringing along a blanket. You just never know and they have so many good use throughout the day!

They’re perfect for:

  • Sunrise summit snuggles
  • Canoe elopements
  • Champagne toasts
  • Post-ceremony hangs
  • Cozy cabin moments

We especially love wool or Pendleton-style blankets, neutral chunky knit throws, or vintage plaid or alpine-inspired patterns.

Hats

The mountains are known to be quite windy but on the right day and for the right couple, it’s a vibe. Wide-brim felt hats adds character and works well in wind and sun. Stick to classic colours like camel, olive, or black. And if you both want to give a nod to your western heritage, please bring the cowboy hats.

Gloves

Please just bring some gloves! It can be such a game changer for for chilly sunrises or alpine wind. It’s hard to bring the fun and joy when you can’t feel your fingers and trying to flip vow book pages when they’re numb is not ideal.

Hair Pieces

We mentioned the wind before, so we don’t usually suggest flower crowns that can blow away but some smaller hair pieces like heirloom jewelry or pins can be so sweet. These small and sentimental details matter, especially when everything else is minimal. You can also bring some statement jewelry like chunky earrings, a delicate necklace, etc.

Vow Books & Ring Boxes

One of the easiest and most common ways to really personalize your elopement accessories is with custom vow books or ring boxes. These little extras don’t take up space but they help tell your story and will be such sentimental reminders of your day.

Backpacks & Adventure Bags

Of course, if we are doing a backcountry elopement or a hiking day, you’ll need to bring your tried and true backpack. You’ll need lots of room to hold all your gear and your vow books, rings, and snacks! We love it when couples get a custom “Just Married” sign and voila, you have the cutest elopement announcement photo! If we are having a ground ceremony and elopement, you can still bring a backpack to help transport items as we travel around to different locations and these backpacks can be a bit more of a vibe if you want.

Shop it: Fjällräven, Cotopaxi, or Monos for stylish, functional options.

You don’t need to go overboard, but a few well-chosen details can really bring that extra something to your photos.

Where Can I Find Mountain-Appropriate Accessories That Aren’t Overly “Bridal”?

Skip the standard wedding shops and try retailers that blend outdoor functionality with modern aesthetics:

  • Etsy: For personalized denim jackets, leather vow books, embroidered beanies, or floral wraps.
  • REI / MEC / Patagonia: For technical layers that look good in photos and handle the elements.
  • Aritzia / Oak + Fort / Free People: For fashion-forward outerwear, knitwear, and layering pieces that still feel elevated.
  • Local shops in Canmore or Banff: Check out Stonewaters or Project A for stylish, small-batch accessories.

Accessories for Your Partner

Your partner deserves to feel stylish and comfortable too! For masculine or gender-neutral looks:

  • Wool vests or tailored layers (think adventure-chic).
  • Leather suspenders or bowties for a rustic touch.
  • Felt hats or beanies (depending on the season).
  • Hiking boots or dressy shoes with grip.
  • Unique ties, like bolo ties or bow ties.
  • Traditional attire for their heritage.

What Couples Forget to Bring

Gloves. Think lightweight wool or leather gloves that are cute and comfortable. Also, a backup layer in case the weather turns hard. Even in July, alpine winds can surprise you. We always suggest that couples bring along some hand warmers, seriously, it makes all the difference having your hands be warm. If you have a jacket or a dress with pockets, even better! You can keep the hand warmers on your body for quick warm up breaks whenever you need.

Mountain Elopement Packing Checklist

You don’t need everything. You just need the pieces that feel like you. We suggest picking 1–3 statement pieces that match your overall vibe.

For example:

  • Romantic & dramatic: Cathedral veil + wool wrap
  • Adventure-chic: Felt hat + blanket
  • Winter alpine: Long cape + leather gloves
  • Minimal & modern: Structured shawl + simple hair pins

Because at the end of the day, mountain elegance isn’t about being perfectly polished. It’s about feeling warm, confident, and completely yourself while standing somewhere wildly beautiful. And if you’re not sure what will work best for your location, elevation, or season, that’s literally what we’re here for.

Your mountain elopement kit should include:

Do I need hiking boots for a mountain elopement?

In most mountain locations, yes. Hiking boots provide traction and safety on uneven terrain. Some couples hike in boots and change into dress shoes or heels for photos but most stay in their hiking boots the whole time.
