Dreamy Sunrise Peyto Lake & Bow Lake Elopement

Emily and Andrea had an incredibly romantic Peyto Lake elopement, starting with a sunrise ceremony followed by a lakeside picnic and then ended up at a chain restaurant that holds a special place in their story. It was such an intentional elopement, filled with details that truly made the day theirs and honoured them as a couple.

Emily & Andrea’s Peyto Lake Elopement

A dreamy October morning in Banff National Park

Emily and Andrea wanted to elope in Banff because it gave them the perfect mixture of mountains, trees, and water. They wanted a chill day that felt both magical and beautiful. And their day was just that. We spent the morning exploring Peyto Lake and then made our way down to Bow Lake for a picnic and portraits. Afterwards, we headed back into Banff to pick up lunch at Chili’s, which was an ode to the many days spent eating there back home during PA school.

Peyto Lake is such a great spot to elope in Banff National Park. It’s located about a half hour north of Lake Louise up the Icefield’s Parkway. It’s a great option if you want those panoramic mountain and lake views without having to hike too far. It’s about a 15 minute walk up to the viewpoint. It’s best for elopements from June-November before the snow really settles in. Emily and Andrea eloped here in October, which is one of our fave times of the year here, because it’s less busy yes, and also because the mountains will likely have a dusting a snow, there are no bugs, and sunrise is a bit later so you won’t have to wake up as early as you would in June to get that dreamy light.

Sunrise ceremony and vows

Emily and Andrea started their day with a first look at the viewpoint. We helped them get into their dresses and then gave them space to see each other all dressed for the first time and really soak it all it before the ceremony. Then, when they were ready, they had their ceremony overlooking the lake where they shared private vows, listened to a recorded prayer from their pastor, exchanged rings, and then did a sand ceremony. It was such a sweet and intimate way to begin their day and their married life together.

The alpenglow on the mountains and the blue of the lake was really showing off for them.

Picnic and Portraits at Bow Lake

After a slow morning at Peyto, we made our way down to Bow Lake where the whole lake was completely still, reflecting the mountains almost perfectly across the water. Andrea and Emily pulled out a blanket, donuts, the Banff mugs they’d picked up in town the day before, and snuggled up for a small picnic setup that felt so them. We wandered around the shoreline for a while before settling into portraits, letting the wind catch their dresses while they laughed through most of it. Later, we played in a small field nearby where they curled up together in the grass while we photographed all the little pieces they brought into the day with them… matching ribbons tied into their boots, their Texas A&M rings, little details and inside references that truly captured them. The whole morning had that feeling to it: relaxed, personal, and just so gorgeous.

Bow Lake is just one of those special places, the mountains and the glaciers are rigghhhtt there and you just feel so immersed in nature. Afterwards, we drove into Banff for their Chili’s pickup, which was just the perfect way to end their day.

Peyto Lake Elopement Photographer

Hey! We’re Liz & Dom, the photo duo behind Elope Wilder, a Banff-based elopement photography team capturing intentional, outdoorsy wedding days across the Canadian Rockies. We’re all about real moments, good energy, and letting your day feel like your actual life together instead of a production of it.

Andrea and Emily’s elopement is a perfect example of that. A sunrise start at Peyto Lake, a slow morning at Bow Lake with donuts and mugs they picked up in town, and an easy, full-circle ending in Banff that tied everything together in a way that just made sense for them.

If you’re planning something that feels more like an experience than an event, we’d love to be part of it. Reach out anytime and let’s make it happen.
